Layers are sliced all through the sides and back of these black locks then blow-dried perfectly to smooth down the top while adding texture to the ends. This simple yet sassy 'do is perfect for those with fine to medium hair and best suited to frame an oval or heart shaped face. Product is needed to tame fly-away hair.

Carly Rae Jepsen flaunts a striking shag cut here with fabulous results. This choppy-cut ‘do gives her a rocker chick look while showcasing her best features. Carly has a heart shaped face which means she has a wide, broad forehead and dainty and defined chin area. Styles that sculpt around the chin and neck area are ideal for this face shape, as are styles with bangs that provide some forehead coverage and frame the eyes. Carly’s choppy bangs highlights her icy blue eyes well while the rest of the layers in her hair add movement to her straight locks.

Carly loves to experiment with her color and has tried dark brown, red and blonde tones. Here, she has chosen a jet-black shade that makes a cool contrast with her porcelain skin tone and light blue eyes. No highlights are needed here as this glossy raven black shade looks best on its own.

Carly Rae Jepsen is a Canadian singer and songwriter from Mission, British Columbia. In 2007, she placed third in Canadian Idol season five's competition.

Styling Steps

1. Comb Hair

Placeholder articles

Comb your hair into the desired direction that you require for styling.

2. Apply Gel Spray

Placeholder articles

Evenly mist gel spray around the top and sides to create a soft hold style. Gel spray will hold well and will not look wet or weigh the hair down.

3. Use a Medium Radial Brush

Placeholder articles

A medium radial brush is used on medium to long hair types to smooth out wavy or curly hair textures or to add body to straight hair. When selecting a radial brush, always use one with a pure bristle as this will not tear or damage the hair.

4. Blow-dry Bangs Forward

Placeholder articles

When blow-drying your bangs forward, clip your hair back leaving only your bangs out. Position your bangs evenly in your brush, taking the hair in a forward direction. Blow-dry from roots to ends, keeping the tension consistent, and evenly distribute heat over the whole section of hair that you are working on. Repeat until the hair is dry. This will stop any frizz that may occur.

5. Use a Blow-dryer to Kick Out the Back

Placeholder articles

Starting at the nape/back of the hair, place your brush on top of the section and blow-dryer down starting from the roots and using tension as you go. Next, place the blow-dryer underneath the hair and continue to blow-dry the ends out. Make sure to follow the brush with the blow-dryer in an outwards direction. If you like fuller flicks, hold the ends out and roll them up into the brush and apply the heat for longer.

6. Blow-dry Straight on the Sides

Placeholder articles

Using your brush, blow-dry in small sections starting from the sides. Tilting your head forward, place the brush an inch below the roots to hold them taut and aim the dryer above the brush for a few seconds before continuing to the ends. Repeat this step on a new section directly above the dry one.

7. Dry Hair Messy with Blow-dryer and Fingers

Placeholder articles

Using your blow-dryer, tilt your head forward and dry your hair using your fingers until your hair is completely dry. Remember, the messier, the better.

8. Pinch Hair for Texture Using Gel

Placeholder articles

Apply gel to your fingertips and then pinch small clumps of hair in an up and forward motion. For a messier look, pinch the clumps in different directions.

9. Style Bangs Forward Using Wax

Placeholder articles

Apply a small amount of wax to your fingertips, and then using your fingers, rake through your bangs pinching the ends as you go to create a feathered, textured effect.

10. Style Sides Out Using Wax

Placeholder articles

To get your sides to sit out, apply a small amount of wax to your fingertips and then working mainly on the ends, pinch them while dragging the hair in an out and upwards motion. Be careful not to overdo that wax or your result will be a flat and limp style.

11. Apply Hairspray

Placeholder articles

To finish, apply a minimal amount of hairspray from an arms length distance to the top, sides and back. Take care not to use too much or you will end up with a white, flaky residue which looks like dandruff.
