Description

Windblown waves are added to the sides and back of this long 'do to give this look movement and volume. This casual hairstyle is easy to re-create with the right tools and needs product to tame fly-away hair. This hairstyle adds volume all over, making it best suited to oblong and oval face shapes. Regular trims will help maintain a healthy look and feel by preventing split ends.

Cat Deeley has expressive facial features and a strong bone structure, which is nicely highlighted by her soft wavy tresses here. Having an oblong face shape, Cat has a high forehead and an overall vertical shape to her face. The best styles for her will make her face appear more oval. Voluminous hairstyles that have lots of body and volume around the face and neck area are ideal for doing just this. The layered ends give her thick hair more finesse, while the tousled waves pump up the volume and add width throughout the sides. Not much styling is needed here as Cat's natural waves and texture do the work; only some simple blow-drying and finishing are needed.

Cat has a golden skin tone, dark eyes and natural mousy brown/dark blonde hair. Here, she goes for her natural tone at the roots, with stunning golden blonde highlights through the lengths and ends. This color brightens up her complexion and gives her an all-over warm glow while bringing out her eyes. This is a good color combo to give off the California girl vibe, plus it looks great with a tan. Cat's ends are noticeably lighter as well, which gives her locks a subtle sun-soaked ombre effect. Regular color touch ups are needed to keep this color looking fresh.

Styling Steps

1. Apply Mousse

Mousse

Apply styling mousse to damp hair, using your palm as a measuring guide, and evenly distribute it along the hair shaft. Styling mousse will add hold and can help achieve better results.

2. Blow-dry Straight Back

Backstraight

Using your brush, blow-dry in small sections starting from the nape/back. Tilting your head forward, place the brush an inch below the roots to hold them taut and aim the dryer above the brush for a few seconds before continuing to the ends.

3. Blow-dry Straight on the Sides

Sidesstraight

Using your brush, blow-dry in small sections starting from the sides. Tilting your head forward, place the brush an inch below the roots to hold them taut and aim the dryer above the brush for a few seconds before continuing to the ends. Repeat this step on a new section directly above the dry one.

4. Blow-dry the Crown

Crown

To blow-dry the crown/top sections, take a section of hair no bigger than the diameter of the brush and blow-dry the hair placing the brush under the section of hair. With your blow-dryer in front of the brush, follow the brush in an upwards direction at the roots and an outwards position at the ends for volume and softness. Continue until the section is dry.

5. Place Large Velcro Rollers in Hair

Velcrolarge

Take a section of hair no wider than the diameter of the velcro roller and comb it through to ensure there are no knots. Place the roller at the ends of the section of hair, being sure to smooth the ends under, and then twist the roller down the hair shaft to the roots. Continue applying the velcro rollers all the way through the entire hair for a full volume finish throughout the sides. Keep the rollers in your hair for approximately 20 minutes.

6. Style Sides Out Using Moulding Cream

Sidesout

To get your sides to sit out, apply a small amount of moulding cream to your fingertips and then working mainly on the ends, pinch them while dragging the hair in an out and upwards motion. The more moulding cream and the more pinching that you apply, the more textured and pasty the result.

7. Tease Hair

Tease

Pick up a small selection of hair from your mid section no bigger than your tail comb. Place your comb at the roots and then comb up and down until the hair is standing up by itself. Continue to the crown and finish at the sides. Repeat this step if you require more volume.

8. Apply Hairspray

Hairsprayfinishing

To finish, apply a minimal amount of hairspray from an arms length distance to the top, sides and back. Take care not to use too much or you will end up with a white, flaky residue which looks like dandruff.

9. Part the Middle

Partmiddle

Using the corner of your comb and standing in front of a mirror find the middle of your nose and then drag the comb straight up slowly until you reach your hairline and then continue back in a straight manner to achieve an even middle part. A middle part is a great way to make small, round face shapes appear longer and thinner.

10. Use a Large Radial Brush

Brushlarge

A large radial brush is usually used on long straight hair types or to smooth out wavy or curly hair textures. When selecting a radial brush, always use one with a pure bristle as this will not tear or damage the hair.
