Updo Hairstyles: Hit and Miss

by Kate Summers (TheHairStyler.com)

We take a look at some fantastic celebrity updos and decide if they're a hit or a miss.

No wedding or formal would be complete without one, and neither would the weekends when you just want your hair up and out of the way!

Updos are a hairstyling staple which allows us to style our hair length into a look that is practical, easy and as feminine or funky looking as we like. But as these celebrities show, the look can either be awe-inspiring or just downright awful!

Hit and Miss Updos

The Ballerina Bun Updo

While Whitney Port nails the classic ballerina bun, Glee star Lea Michele gets the look all wrong. Her upstyle is too thick and too messy when it comes to flawlessly recreating this formal updo.

The Quiff Updo

A quiff updo is great for creating a style that shows off your face and looks funky yet elegant. Reese Witherspoon does this perfectly with her updo, Paris Hilton on the other hand has way too much height and frizz to create the right look.

The Beehive Updo

The must have hairstyle of the 50s and early 60s, the Beehive is still a very popular updo, and when done right (à la Holly Hunter), looks sensational. With knotty strands and way too much height though, you could end up with a look reminiscent of this shocker from Maria Kanellis.

The Simple Updo

Updo's aren't all height and perfect curls, just simply pulling your hair back and leaving a few choice strands around your face is enough to create a simple yet stunning look, just as Glee star Dianna Agron has achieved. Charlize Theron, however, proves that even the most simplest of styles can become complicated messes.

The Retro Updo

As Lisa Snowdon shows, giving your updo a retro twist can be lots of fun and very stylish. But too much of good thing, (or in Anna Nicole Smith's case - too many curls), can overshadow the retro vibe and leave you with an updo that's better left in the past.

The Modern Updo

By combining sleekness and creative curls, Christina Aguilera successfully pulls off a modern updo that's big on the cool factor. Roisin Murphy's version, however, come across as flat, tangled bun that's more drab than fab.
