Makeup Do's

Model with brunette hair Do make sure to store your makeup products in a cool, dry place and that you always put any lids back on tightly so your makeup stays fresh.

Do make sure your hands are clean when handling your makeup and before dipping into your jars or bottles. Also ensure your eyeliner and lip liner is germ free by giving them a quick sharpen after every use.

Do allow any moisturizers applied to your skin to sink in before applying makeup. If you don’t allow enough time between your moisturizer and application of makeup then your makeup can be absorbed with your moisturizer, which can cause it to fade quickly or give you a flawed finished result.

Do replace your makeup regularly, especially if there are any changes to the color, consistency or fragrance.

Do some research into the colors that will suit your complexion before you buy. Foundation, eye shadow, blush and lipstick shades that flatter and enhance your natural skin tone will look great no matter the makeup look or occasion.

Do make sure your makeup has a great foundation by looking after your skin and investing your time in a regular skin care routine. For an idea about where to start, see our beauty article, Morning Skin Care Routine in 3 Easy Steps.

Makeup Don'ts

Model with pink lipstick Don’t go overboard. Makeup should be used to bring out your best features. The worst makeup mistake is to look overdone.

Don’t share makeup products with other people, especially mascara, eyeliner and lip gloss. These products can easily collect and transfer germs and bacteria if shared.

Don't match makeup textures. If your lips are glossy then use matt eye shadow and vice versa to keep the balance of your makeup look in check.

Don’t go to bed with your makeup on. Not washing your makeup off means that your skin can’t repair and renew itself overnight, which could lead to a dull complexion and breakouts. If you’ve had a big night out then keep some makeup wipes on hand to clean off your makeup easily when you're tired.

Don’t be afraid to try new makeup trends. While classic makeup looks, such as curved lashes, red lipstick and just flushed cheeks never go out of fashion, keeping your look modern and updated by trying the latest trends (which could include a glittery eye shadow or colored eyeliner) is a great way to give yourself a new look.

Don’t forget to blend. The key to flawless makeup application, whether it’s foundation, eye shadow, blush or lipstick is to blend. Always ensure there are no harsh lines or places on your face where it’s obvious that your makeup has been applied to achieve the most flattering and natural finish.
