It was promoted as the Oscars for a younger generation after James Franco and Anne Hathaway (pictured right) were announced as hosts for Hollywood's night of nights, but the celebrities, the fashion and the hairstyles were far from modern or funky with most stars choosing to play it safe with long luscious waves and elegant upstyles.
Not every safe hairstyle looked great, however, and there were plenty of stars that got it wrong - as our picks for the best and worst hairstyles show...
The Best Hairstyles
It was no surprise that Natalie Portman picked up the Best Actress Oscar for her performance in Black Swan having already won every other major award this season. The pregnant actress made a great hairstyle choice for collecting her award with her beautiful side-styled wavy 'do. It was the perfect way to show off her healthy looking locks and light brown hair color, and it suited the style of her dress.
This Barbie inspired ponytail from Reese Witherspoon had us on the fence, but she was one of few celebrities who actually choose to style their hair in a different way so that bumped her over to our best list. Her 'do could have easily turned into a boring upstyle if it wasn't for the fun mass of curly blonde length adding some great interest to her look.
Having hit a bit of a low note with her sparkly blue dress, Amy Adams hit all the right notes with her long wavy hairstyle. Her lovely copper red hair color, the shine of her hair and the soft loose waves made for a beautiful style and was one of the hair highlights of the night.
The Worst Hairstyles
At the top of our worst hairstyles list is this backcombed look from Sharon Stone. We're all for adding volume to your updo, but this teasing goes over-the-top and does nothing but add length and age to Sharon's face shape and features.
Nicole Kidman is another redhead with a great hair tone and length, but hiding it all in this boring upstyle is not the way to go. The piecey bangs also do nothing for the finish of her look and would have looked much more glamorous as side-swept bangs pinned into place with a great hair accessory.
Our final hairstyle is this short look from Annette Bening. Volume can really add some snap to a short hairstyle but not when that extra lift simply looks like you just rolled out of bed, ran a comb through your hair and then headed out the door. For future reference when wearing a short hairstyle with funk, Annette should check out Halle Berry's range of short hairdos.
