Caring For Blonde Hair At The Salon and At Home

TheHairStyler.com Hair Feature
By Katie Summers, THS Consultant

While some might say that blondes have more fun, caring for blonde hair can zap some of that fun away, especially if you're not naturally blonde and are relying on hair color to keep your locks lusciously light.

Fading, re-growth and brassiness are all common problems that can plague bottle blondes but can be counteracted with the right kind of salon and home care.

Beating Brassiness

At The Salon
Beating brassiness starts with picking the right color. Ash blonde tones will neutralize any hint of yellow whereas golden tones will add emphasize to brassy tones.

At Home

Try using a toner between salon visits or a specific blonde shampoo which is designed to keep your blonde color classy and not brassy.

Fading

At The Salon
It's very important to make sure that your hair is well conditioned before you visit the salon to ensure that your hair absorbs as much color as possible.

At Home

Ensuring that your hair is also well conditioned once it has been colored will go a long way to keeping your blonde locks looking their best and to keeping your color for as long as possible. Using color specific shampoos and products that contain sunscreen will also help to minimize fading caused by everyday washing and sun exposure.

Re-growth

At The Salon
While nothing will stop re-growth from ruining your perfect blonde color, there are some things that you can do to disguise your roots, such as not going more than 3 shades lighter than your natural hair color (which will help to minimize really obvious re-growth) and having highlights done instead of a solid color to ensure a better blend of color.

At Home

Using a zigzag part will break up obvious re-growth and headbands and scarves are the perfect cover-ups.

Being blonde does take work and can be very damaging to your hair, however, preparing your hair before visiting the salon and keeping up with maintenance and a basic hair care routine at home is the key to ensuring that your blonde locks are your crowning glory.
