Shakira was born in Colombia,
February 2, 1977. Her mother is half Colombian and half Italian and her
father is American with Lebanese ancestry. She became Latin pop's biggest
female star in the late '90s with the release of her first album "Pies
Descalzo", although this did not make her internationally famous,
Shakira continued singing and writing her own soft rock tunes.
It wasn't until 2001 that she broke the English barrier with her single
"Whenever, Wherever". Thanks to her Lebanese background
she became world known for her sexy belly dancing and hip shaking ways.
From there it was hit after hit releasing her English debut album "Laundry
service". Less than a year after release the album had gone triple
platinum and Shakira started to become one of the most popular Latin
stars.
Fijacion oral, vol 1, the first half of latest album, was released
in 2005 and sold over 157,000 copies in its first week, hitting the number
1 spot on various latin charts including the US. It also became the highest
selling Spanish language album in history. The first single "La
Tortura" was a number one hit, topping the US Latin charts.
Now with the second part of the album, "Oral Fixation vol 2"
released, Shakira continues with her brand of rock/pop/spanish songs and
has written and produced all of the songs on the album, most of which are
from real life experiences, and are sure to continue this stars hit song
streak.
