Short Head-Contouring Hairstyle With Soft layers

Added: 10 Nov 2010
This short head-contouring hairstyle with soft layers is an effortless hairdo that you can wear for any occasion. It is great for any face shape, and features soft layers that fall over the shoulders, adding volume and length to the crown area.

Our model has done a great job of styling her 'do with dark brunette hair color. The soft layers and bangs complement her diamond face shape perfectly. With this hairdo, she looks much younger which is a great outcome! It is a short and sexy hairstyle that has plenty of soft layers that contour the head and show great definition. For the hair styling technique, the back is tapered flat, down to the nape for a clean finish. The sides are layered flat to the head for a soft and wispy effect at the front of the face. This hairstyle is suited for women with medium to thick hair texture. It is best suited for oval, oblong, and square face shapes and those who want to add volume to their hair. The hairstyle is a modern take on the classic pixie. It features soft layered cuts, which are cut close to the scalp and sides with thick bangs.

This short hairstyle is perfect for people who want to maintain their current look as well as be able to change it up. Regular trims after four to six weeks will keep your hair looking great and shiny, while soft layers allow you to style it any way you desire. Direct your hair into position while applying the finishing products.

step 1

Squeeze a small amount of straightening balm into your palms and then rub your hands together before smoothing the product evenly through damp hair.

step 2

A medium radial brush is used on medium to long hair types to smooth out wavy or curly hair textures or to add body to straight hair. When selecting a radial brush, always use one with a pure bristle as this will not tear or damage the hair.

step 3

Using your brush, blow-dry in small sections starting from the nape/back. Tilting your head forward, place the brush an inch below the roots to hold them taut and aim the dryer above the brush for a few seconds before continuing to the ends.

step 4

Using your brush, blow-dry in small sections starting from the sides. Tilting your head forward, place the brush an inch below the roots to hold them taut and aim the dryer above the brush for a few seconds before continuing to the ends. Repeat this step on a new section directly above the dry one.

step 5

Take a section of your hair no wider than the diameter of your brush. Place your brush under and at the roots of your section. Then with your blow-dryer above, drag the brush up through the mid-lengths and ends of the hair following with your blow-dryer and pulling the hair to the left. Repeat until your hair is completely dry.

step 6

Take a section of your hair no wider than the diameter of your brush. Place your brush under and at the roots of your section. Then with your blow-dryer above, drag the brush up through the mid-lengths and ends of the hair following with your blow-dryer and pulling the hair to the right. Repeat until your hair is completely dry.

step 7

To blow-dry your bangs to the side, clip the back and side sections up, leaving just your bangs out. Place your brush beneath your bangs, holding your hair to the side and remembering to hold the tension between your hair and brush. With your blow-dryer on a low setting, apply heat by starting at the roots and make sure to stretch your hair out to the ends. Repeat until your hair is dry.

step 8

Apply some wax to your fingertips and then pull through the ends of your hair in a downward motion to achieve a sculptured look. Pinch clumps of hair in different directions for a messier result.

step 9

Using a small amount of wax, work it through the mid-lengths and ends in a downward, pinching motion. For added texture, apply more pinching and more wax.

step 10

Apply a very small amount of smoothing shine to the palms of your hands and then run it through the mid-lengths and ends of your hair. Be careful not to add any to the roots or a large amount to any section of the hair as smoothing shine can be very heavy on the hair, weighing it down and making it appear oily.

step 11

To finish, apply a minimal amount of hairspray from an arms length distance to the top, sides and back. Take care not to use too much or you will end up with a white, flaky residue which looks like dandruff.
