Classic Hairstyles

TheHairStyler.com Hair Feature
By Angela Fiorenza, THS Hair Consultant

What is a classic hairstyle? Simple and harmonious, yet elegant.

When we think of the word classic we automatically think of an older topic. History is full of classic famous celebrities from Elvis Presley to the blonde bombshell Marilyn Monroe, all of whom had hairstyles we'd like to see on ourselves.

The 10 most influential classic hairstyles are: the bun, shag cut, french pleat, finger wave, bouffant, classic bob, chignon, caeser, quiff and college cut.

Classic hairstyles work well with most face shapes. Oval is considered the "Ideal face shape".

Classic Hairstyles for Women
Classic hairstyles for women include the likes of Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn, Elizabeth Taylor, Kim Novak, Sophia Loren, Jane Fonda, and Lauren Bacall.

Classic Hairstyles: Marilyn Monroe hairstyle

This classic hairstyle was made famous by Marilyn Monroe in the mid fifties. A full soft sensual style that required roller setting and teasing for lasting results. Similar hairstyles have made a come back in recent times, with blow-dryers taking over from rollers, which makes styling quicker and more natural looking.

Style Tip: large rollers can be used in damp hair, wound across from one side and then down, or alternatively hot rollers can be used on dry hair. Left in for 15 minutes, the rollers are then taken out and the hair is combed up. Teasing is required to form a base at the roots and give a lasting hold. To finish, lacquer the entire hairstyle for extra hold.

This top heavy wedge shape hairstyle, with kiss curls in the sides, was one of the most worn styles in the fifties. An elegant look made famous by Audrey Hepburn, this hairstyle suits small round face shapes best.

Style Tip: apply mousse to damp hair then working in sections, starting from the crown, blow-dry hair under using a medium round brush. Once completely dry, some teasing can be done for added height and accentuated shape. Finish with some smooth shine for gloss and lacquer for a strong hold.

Classic Hairstyles for Men

This short tapered back and sides hairstyle, with a heavy top, truly is a classic. The shape was introduced mid to late fifties and continued to be worn in modified shapes right through the rock and roll era by various artists. It is good on straight to soft wavy hair types.

Style Tip: bruell cream was used to hold hair into place and for gloss. Today, wax can be used for a similar result, with gel spray used to fix the hair into place.

This example of a modified college cut is a favored hairstyle still worn by many men today. The short back and sides are neat and tidy while the top is only slightly longer, but not too long, to fall into the eyes. No wonder Schools preferred it and hence it got its name.

Style Tip: modern day styling products such as wax and moulding creams help keep this style fresh and in place. Just comb and go.
