Music Review: Back to Basics

3 years after releasing the chart topping "Stripped", Christina Aguilera returns with "Back To Basics."

Fans of Christina will know that she's been talking about doing this "concept" album for quite awhile, and to make sure that the wait was worth it, Christina stretched the album into 2 discs.

The first disc follows the basic principles of "Stripped", there's the intro "Back to Basics", the chart hit "Ain't No Other Man", the song about domestic abuse "Oh Mother" and the woman power anthems "Still Dirrty" and "I'm Here To Stay."

Disc two gets a little heavier with "Enter The Circus" and "Welcome", where Christina has a go at the world of Celebrity, and features the most concept heavy songs with "Candyman", "Nasty Naughty Boy" and "I Got Trouble" which all could have easily been taken from the '20s, '30s and '40s where Christina drew her inspiration.

Again like, "Stripped", "Back To Basics" offers a lot of songs (some better than others) but also suffers from the same fate of sounding directionless. The central theme of both discs is love, and if you didn't know that Christina had recently been married, you will after listening to "Back To Basics" as at least 6 songs, "Makes Me Wanna Pray", "Ain't No Other Man", "Understand", "Without You", "Save Me From Myself" and "The Right Man" are squarely directed at Christina's husband.

As a whole the album mostly succeeds thanks to the production and vocals and would have most certainly not worked had a singer of less vocal ability tried such a risky concept. That said, "Back To Basics" features a lot of over singing, and while Christina had a huge range of singles to choose from with "Stripped", "Back To Basics" has already released the one true stand out song with "Ain't No Other Man."
